The past year has been challenging for most of us. But especially for medical sector workers, who experienced lots of stressful moments and have felt on edge since the start of this pandemic. Feeling the utmost empathy for dedicated people who work tirelessly to save lives and serve the ones who get sick, we felt the need to be of service to them. Inspired by similar acts of kindness worldwide, we wanted to take part in this beautiful movement.
At the beginning of the pandemic, there was a shortage of simple protective materials extremely needed by the brave ones on the front line – medical personnel. While the suppliers could not deal with the lack, we thought it’s time to act and do what we do best – work with our sewing machines and fabrics. We came to the idea of sewing protective face masks – both functional and made with love by our own hands – and distributing them to local hospitals. The protective face masks we have sewn were breathable, washable and made of high-quality layered linen, efficiently protecting the wearer. We also hope that the colourful face masks brightened the care facility workers' day at least a bit. We were not aiming to create medical-grade masks, yet they might have helped the essential medical workers feel safer.
We distributed the hand-made linen face masks to medical personnel in hospitals as a sincere offering. We hope this simple act of kindness could sparkle at least a little bit of joy into their hearts and make them feel cared for and highly supported. We were happy to see the bright and brave faces of the individuals who do everything they can to help others in need. We are thankful to our personnel as well, who kindly participated in this project.
Sometimes acts like these can be like a meditation technique, helping to relax the brain and transform the negative thoughts, which can often get into us during this period, into positive ones. With each linen fabric stitch, we reminded ourselves of the importance of caring for one another and trying to be a better person each day. If you have a spare piece of fabric at home, we encourage you to reuse it and sew a face mask for yourself instead of purchasing one – it’s much easier than it might initially seem. Or gift it to someone in need.
